Introducing Markforged’s new material (Onyx FR) designed for use within the Aerospace, Defense and Automotive industries.

Traditional plastics will burn but Onyx FR being V-0 rated in the UL94 flammability test self extinguishes, in less then 10 seconds. Onyx FR maintains its unmatched strength, high surface finish and superior print quality – whilst resisting fire.

Onyx FR (Fire Retardant)

When Onyx FR is smartly reinforced with strands of carbon fiber, the end part is as strong as aluminium, but half the weight. All whilst meeting fire safety standards. Kevlar and fiberglass reinforcement is also possible for alternative applications, such as vibration resistance.

“Onyx FR opens up more applications for 3D printing across automotive, aerospace, and defense industries because it meets higher fire safety standards. When these parts are reinforced with strands of continuous carbon fiber, they are as strong as aircraft-grade aluminum at half the weight,” said Jon Reilly, VP of Product at Markforged.
