Schubert

Discover how the global market leader in top-loading packaging machines utilised Ultimaker 3D printers to revolutionise their design process.

Problem

Top Loading Packaging (TLP) machines bring a future-proofed solution to Schubert’s customers (which include Ferrero, Nestle and others). They depend upon Schubert’s automated systems to provide packaging lines for all occasions.

One of the most valued supplicant of Schubert’s service is their production of new tools for their packaging machines. The purpose of these tools is to allow one machine to be able to package many different products, regardless of their differences. For example, the same machine could be used to make packages for an Easter Egg and a Football simply through the use of different tools. Customers can also send a product to Schubert that they wish to mass-produce, and Schubert can develop bespoke tools and programming to allow for their machines to handle that product.

Solution

Through the use of 3D printing, Schubert are able to more access to more freedom in their manufacturing process. Bespoke tools no longer take weeks to design and produce; instead, they can be printed in only a few days. For example, a tool which previously consisted of 200 separate parts can now be created with a 1 simple 3D print. The iterations that Schubert are able to make on their designs has also increased dramatically since the introduction of their 3D printers, resulting in large cost savings in R&D.
