Problem

Killa Design is one of the many architectural companies who have been taking advantage of CAD tools and construction techniques to revolutionise their design freedom. Based in Dubai, Killa Design centres its focus upon creating unique buildings – including the world’s first occupied 3D printed office space.

Killa Design found that when constructing a building using incredibly complex shapes, the process can become incredibly challenging from both the design and practical viewpoints. In the early stages of the design process, architects like to see small-scale versions of their constructions so that they can have a gauge of what the final result will be. However, with these more complex designs to create a small-scale version of the construction becomes incredibly difficult.

Solution

In comes 3D printing – through the utilisation of Ultimaker 3D Printers, Killa Design were able to 3D print a small-scale version of the incredibly complex Museum of the Future in Dubai, which has nearly all curvaceous features and is otherwise one of the most complex buildings in the world. Thanks to Ultimaker’s dual extrusion print heads, other architects throughout the world are now finding themselves able to print any shape they require, at the time they require it.
