Handheld 3D scanners are quickly rising in popularity among engineers, industrial designers, and many other manufacturing professionals. The technology makes it fast, easy, and affordable to digitise parts and prototypes, reverse engineer machinery, and streamline design processes.

Peel 3D — a spinoff of Canadian leading 3D scanner manufacturer Creaform — has been at the frontlines of the 3D scanning revolution for years. The Peel 3D handheld 3D scanners have done much to make 3D scanning more accessible with their high accuracy, compact design, and affordable price. Now, Peel 3D has taken the technology to a new level with its freshly released Peel 3.CAD and Peel 3 scanners.

These next-generation scanners make capturing parts and objects as 3D files smoother and more comfortable. Read on to learn how Peel 3.CAD ups the ante in 3D scanning.

More Comfortable Scanning

The previous generations of Peel 3D scanners looked more or less similar. Their design resembled that of a handheld power drill — with the top part sliced short.

Peel 3.CAD, on the other hand, has a whole new form factor. The scanner unit is embedded into a triangular handle. Peel 3D has emphasized comfort and ergonomics in the next-generation scanner’s design.

When using handheld 3D scanners, the user has to move the device around the target part or object. It’s often necessary to turn and angle the device to capture the shape and details with sufficient accuracy, particularly with more complex or intricate parts. While 3D scanners generally work fast, twisting and turning them can tire your hand and arm.

Peel 3.CAD’s unique, ergonomic handle has been designed to increase comfort in all of the most common scanning positions. The user can grip the long handle at any point and hold the device at nearly any angle from vertical to horizontal — all the while keeping their wrist at a natural, comfortable position.

For further comfort and ease of use, Peel 3D has integrated a new multi-function touchpad into the scanner’s handle. The user can easily operate the intuitive menus with their thumb without letting go of the device or looking at a separate computer. The touchpad also functions as a distance meter for fast and simple measurements during scanning.

Listen to Your Scanner

In addition to the touchpad, Peel 3D has introduced another innovation to make 3D scanning more user-friendly. As an industry-first feature, Peel 3.CAD provides the user with haptic feedback during the scanning process.

Depending on what the scanner “sees” and its position, the device produces various different vibration patterns to inform and guide the user. Based on the feedback, you can move the device appropriately even when reaching into narrow spaces with limited visibility.

Thanks to the vibration patterns, it’s possible to scan more complex geometries with greater accuracy. The high level of automated feedback also lowers the learning curve and helps new users get better results.

An All-in-One Solution

Scanning an object is just the first part of the 3D scanning process. Afterwards, the raw 3D model will likely require further processing, such as correcting small errors, sharpening details, or converting to different file formats.

Peel 3.CAD integrates seamlessly with peel.OS, Peel 3D’s proprietary data acquisition software. The scanner feeds the captured data directly into the software, producing a highly accurate 3D model.

After scanning, you can simply use the program to work on the 3D model. With the included tools, it’s fast and simple to clean up the 3D model, fill in details, change alignment, smoothen surfaces, merge different 3D models, and more.

Doing the post-processing work in one software saves time as scanner users don’t need to swap to a separate program to finish the 3D models. You can also save money by not paying subscription costs for multiple software packages.

You don’t have to restrict yourself to peel.OS, though. The peel.CAD upgrade adds the ability to export your cleaned and finetuned 3D models to file formats compatible with all major CAD software. The Peel 3.CAD scanner and its software tools integrate easily into your workflows and improve productivity by eliminating unnecessary file processing steps.

Scan Anything in Accurate Detail

But comfortable ergonomics, user-friendly design, and simple workflows aren’t everything — you also need to get powerful performance out of a good 3D scanner. Peel 3.CAD delivers in this area, not only matching but improving the performance of its predecessors.

Peel 3.CAD can capture details as small as 0.1mm, with a mesh resolution of 0.25mm. It’s compatible with object sizes ranging from as tiny as 0.1mm all the way to 3m at a distance of 250-550mm.

The scanner can also scan colours at a resolution of 250 DPI, while also accurately recording surface textures. Scanning even large objects doesn’t take long as Peel 3.CAD can reach a scanning speed of 80s/m2.

A Versatile 3D Scanner for All Applications

Its high detail accuracy, wide capture range, and fast performance make Peel 3.CAD a versatile tool. It can digitise most engineering and manufacturing parts or prototypes in many applications, including:

  • Automotive: Automotive 3D scanning is increasingly common amongst car and motorcycle manufacturers. A 3D scanner allows automotive manufacturers to reverse engineer vehicles and parts, quickly iterate on designs, ensure perfect component fit, and scan vehicles into digital models for display and online storefronts.
  • Aerospace: Aerospace manufacturers depend on accurate measurements and precisely fitting parts to improve safety and performance. Peel 3.CAD helps them achieve optimal part structures.
  • Design & Art: 3D scanning is a valuable tool for creative professionals, from architects to industrial designers and fine artists. You can easily scan hand-sculpted designs and prototypes into 3D models or digitise heritage furniture or works of art for restoration and repair.
  • Healthcare: Each human body is unique, which means there are few one-size-fits-all solutions in medical applications. 3D scanners help doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers scan a patient’s body to accurately design and fit prosthetics, plan treatment plans, and more.
  • Education: Future professional engineers, designers, and manufacturers must know how to use the most cutting-edge technologies. The Peel 3.CAD for education package makes it easy to teach students about 3D scanning and why so many industries depend on it.
